Yes, I agree that some people might not have read these changes. The administration, for their part, published these changes in the Telegram channel, and players discussed them among themselves. This isn't the first time... The first high-profile case was when a player's best 84 two-handed hammer +13 was stolen on a x2 server...That's exactly how I understand this section of the rules. It's a classic case of everyone washing their hands of it. You'll probably agree that not every player reads the rules in their entirety before joining a server. And I agree, they should know, and I can't use that as an argument, but that's where my five years of experience with this server ends. Not to mention, similar issues were addressed last year, but not everyone was aware of them.
It's unfortunate that you've found yourself in this situation. If you don't plan to play anymore because of this, you can contact support and tell them you sold your item for US dollars (real money trade). Both parties will likely be banned. It's a small thing, but a nice touch.
